When I started out in banking, in spite of my Musical Theatre degree handicap, I realised very quickly that the biggest challenge wasn’t learning how to do the job it was learning how to work with other people.  We are rarely taught the skills of working with others at school or University and most of us walk into the workforce blindsided.

Sometimes we have the good fortune of working with like-minded individuals.  But most of the time, we might as well work with aliens: we have little understanding of other people.  And occasionally we will come across an irritating wasp, someone seemingly intent on driving us to distraction.

So when we are trying to get the work done, we need to remember that most of the ‘work’ involves understanding people.
