Are you ever tempted to procrastinate? Don’t worry, I know the answer to that.  I’m just messing with you.

There are lots of reasons we procrastinate but probably one of the most common reasons is that we want to get it right. Maybe even perfect. And if we can’t get it perfect, what’s the point right?

Wrong! We are surrounded by examples of people starting projects imperfectly.  An obvious example is the iPhone. I have an iPhone 8, not as good as the iPhone 4 I’m guessing and probably not as good as the iPhone 14, I wouldn’t know. But just imagine if Steve Jobs had avoided going into his garage for a second? Imagine if he just couldn’t shake off the feeling that an apple logo was a bit mad. Or that he might need to go on an advanced calligraphy course before he felt good enough to judge the aesthetics of a mobile phone. Or that he didn’t deserve to go into the garage because he was a college dropout. Agreed: absurd. If he had procrastinated the most iconic global brand most definitely wouldn’t exist.

To spell out the teaching point, here is a piece of advice I picked up from Mike Litman last week: ‘You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going.’

Please disregard this advice if you are a dentist or a surgeon.
