Last weekend I was up at Northampton RFC watching an historic rugby game between Northampton Saints and Gloucester. The score line was 90 to Saints 0 to Gloucester. Ouch.

As a coach, I am always asking clients: what did you learn about yourself from that experience? Failure can often lead to the most profound learning that jump starts our progress.

And in order to learn from failure, we need to park our ego at the door. We need to get off our pedestal and courageously examine ourselves.  It is the only thing we can control after all.  It is challenging work for the ego.

So I was surprised to read in the papers the following day that the Gloucester Manager would have done nothing differently.

As we know failure is an essential stepping stone to success, but only if we can learn from it.

If you are not getting the results you want, never overlook the power of humility.
