It occurred to me that some of us look after our cars better than we look after ourselves. We give our car an annual check-up to ensure it’s road worthy, we regularly maintain and service it, we insure it against unforeseen circumstances and practically, we need to fill its tank. And depending just how much you love your car, you might even go as far as giving it a wax and polish.

We don’t ignore the flashing hazard on our dashboard.

We don’t carry on an extra 30 miles without fuel in the tank.

We don’t take a long journey without checking the tyres, oil and water.

We look after our car partly because if we don’t, at best it will conk out and at worst it will blow up.

Yet how many of us drive on regardless of too little sleep? How many of us skip the gym because a meeting has been put in the diary? How many of us avoid real connection because we are preoccupied by our to do list?

If we want to enjoy the journey or arrive at our destination, we need just as much maintenance as our car.
