I confess, I got called out by my 15 year old son this weekend and honestly, I was embarrassed for myself.
Picture this: it was Sunday morning and I was making pancakes. I am a practical working Mother who had to reschedule Shrove Tuesday, twice (just in case you were picturing ‘From Charlotte, With Love’). And as I was flipping pancakes, I had a ticker-tape of tasks running through my head.
Now as a graduate of David Allen’s ‘Getting Things Done’ training, I pride myself on efficiency and focussing on the task in hand. So I automatically reached for the pen strategically placed in the kitchen for the sole purpose of jotting down thoughts as they arise.
Only the pen was missing. And I flipped out. Full on toys-out-of-the-pram moment.
As my son pointed out, my reaction would have been more appropriate if a nuclear bomb had been dropped on our road.
Awkward.
The diagnosis? Overwhelm. The prescription? Slow down.
So this is for anyone who is struggling to see the wood for the trees today. I can’t promise you the world is not about to end, but I can promise you that, paradoxically, slowing down will almost always get you where you are going faster.
