I find it embarrassing that some advice posted online actually needs to be said.

I was, however, delighted to hear Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan, call out the insidious behaviour that is creeping into organisations and his call to action to work smarter.

Dimon’s ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’:

  1. Stop reading e-mails and texts during meetings. It is disrespectful and wastes time.
  2. Avoid jargon. Talk like you speak.
  3. Don’t read an e-mail 2 or 3 times, address it immediately.

As he summarised, “more and more people are being disrespectful, condescending and unwilling to listen to one another. When all is said and done, let’s hope we can all treat each other with a little more respect.”

Swoon.

So here is a rallying cry to give every discussion 100% of your attention. And don’t just limit it to the workplace. Your children, your partner and your friends will thank you too.
