When a client comes to coaching, they are usually wanting something different in their life. Within my coaching toolkit, one coaching tool is ‘The Challenge’. The idea is to challenge a client so far as to render them speechless, at least momentarily.
As they catch their breath, I explain there are three choices:
- Accept The Challenge.
- Refuse The Challenge.
- Negotiate The Challenge.
But at no stage is ‘Trying The Challenge’ allowed.
Trying is optional.
We could try and workout first thing in the morning but our warm bed is likely to be more appealing.
We could try and have that tough conversation with our boss but avoiding it would be so much more comfortable.
We could try and reduce our stress but activity can be so seductive.
Making choices, however, is conscious and intentional. Choosing is the gateway to freedom so many of us crave.
